MetaLearning LLC was founded in 2009 to advance the opportunity presented by next generation digital learning tools.  Its initial focus is on the use of ePortfolios in K-12 and Higher Education.  The founders are dedicated to the vision of  a revolution in experiential learning environments and teaching techniques.

Trent Batson - Founding Partner

Trent Batson has served as a professor and an administrator in higher education at Michigan State, George Washington, Carnegie Mellon, University of Rhode Island and MIT over 4 decades. In 1985, he began work as an innovator in technology applications for higher education and won an EDUCAUSE award for best innovation for under-prepared writers in 1989. He was also a finalist for the Smithsonian-Computerworld award in 1990. He has had major grants from the Annenberg/CPB Projects, IBM, Boeing, Department of Education, Information Technology Association of America (ITAA), and the Mellon Foundation – in all cases serving as project director or chair of the board and in all cases the grant involved multiple colleges and universities.

Batson’s specialty is electronic portfolios and related opportunities for enriching teaching and learning and assessment. At the University of Rhode Island, he was one of the administrators involved in the University ePortfolio rollout. He has presented extensively about ePortfolios and regularly writes 2 to 4 articles a month for Campus Technology.

Having been involved in higher education as both a professor and an administrator, Batson understands the enterprise well, and especially is able to strategize about how to best use technology on campus for teaching, learning, and assessment. He has consulted for 25 years with colleges and universities about technology innovation, working with the TLT Group in Wheaton, MD and through his various grants. He is often invited to meetings to participate as a speaker or panelist. His most recent book publication was a chapter in Opening Up Education, Kumar and Iiyoshi, MIT Press, 2008.
